The Federalist Papers

Been taking the time to actually read these documents. It’s actually pretty scary how relevant they are to what is going on today. Full listing at the Library of Congress

Among the most formidable of the obstacles which the new Constitution will have to encounter may readily be distinguished the obvious interest of a certain class of men in every State to resist all changes which may hazard a diminution of the power, emolument, and consequence of the offices they hold under the State establishments; and the perverted ambition of another class of men, who will either hope to aggrandize themselves by the confusions of their country, or will flatter themselves with fairer prospects of elevation from the subdivision of the empire into several partial confederacies than from its union under one government.

The Joy of the Extended Warranty

We had picked up a Sony rear projection TV, floor model, a couple years ago at Sears. Price was great and it was the last in house so we got around a $600 discount.

Since it was a floor model and god knows how long the thing was in store and powered on, I got the 5-year extended warranty for about $300. Seemed like alot but as we were warned by the sales person, the bulbs need to be replaced every year or so and they ran a bit over a $100.

We got about a year and a half before the lamp died and although it took almost 2 weeks for the replacement to come in it was pretty much hassle free.

A couple days ago the TV went green/black bars and looked awful. Turns out we need a new Q-Box, has something to do with the digital signal, and it should be replaced next week. Total cost if we didnt have the warranty? $550

At worst, we were pre-paying the cost of a handful of lamps that were sure to burn out pretty regularly - at best, we get a brand new TV if they can’t repair a problem.

I know alot of people think extended warranties are a rip-off, but you just need to pick and choose what to insure.

Site Issues

Network Solutions had some issues with some bad name server entries last week and it seems to have caused me some extra problems. Trying to work them out.

Malaria

I’ve never been a big, huge fan of Mr. Gates but that stunt he pulled was just another bad example of people not grasping a problem.

He really means well and his foundation does alot of good work.. However, Malaria has nothing to do with poverty and everything to do with the lack of use of DDT.

Rich or poor, if you get bitten by a malaria carrying mosquito you will get very ill. If you get infected with a particularly virulent strain you stand a good chance of dying.

DDT is one of the great wonders of chemistry and to compel 3rd world nations not to use it in favor of other pesticides is out and out criminal.

The ban on use of DDT was simply a powerplay by the environmental movement and the so called research into the plight of birds was so absolutely cooked it is beyond ludicrous.

Warhammer - Age of … who cares?

Frankly, I didn’t go into this one with hope. I missed some of my friends and I thought it would be nice to hang out a bit again since we hadn’t really done anything since Lord of the Rings faded away.

Bottom line with this one is that it looks too much like WoW, without the good features of WoW. If this game had come out 5 years ago I would rate it very high, but its kind of a late to the table with what it offers. I have to give the content crew some kudos for the sprawling, intricate creationion of the main cities and surrounding lands, but sadly it doesn’t carry too far into the rest of the game.

  • Interface sucks

Unless you like constantly re-adjusting your window posistions and hiding drill-downs you are left with a relatively small area of your screen to move your character around, dare you stray too far you will end up activating context menus on your chat or quest sideboards. Practically everything you click on has a context menu and when you are trying to move around this isnt a Good Thing™.

While I loathe Warcraft, atleast Blizzard designed a smooth and very clean interface. This one is clunkly, with relatively slow draw/response times and I find I spend more time fighting with it than not.

Sadly, it looks not all that much better than UO:Kingdom Reborn and if I had to guess I would have to say UO is using a pre-alpha version of the Warhammer client.

  • Population imbalance

Realm populations are horribly imbalanced on most servers. It’s clear that there are no controls on how many players on each side at any given time and it shows in game. Make no mistake, this is a PvP game, and when you are outnumbered 2 or 3 to 1 it gets old really damn quick. Yes, you can probably get away with never experiencing the PvP in Warhammer but why would you want to? The game is geared to that playstyle.

  • Animations broken

Normally graphics don’t bother me too much, hell I still play Asheron’s Call and UO.. albeit not much lately, but nothing stands out more than the things that are so horribly, horribly wrong. During the development cycle of a game, one of the earliest things that is worked on is character models and how they move and look. If anything this should be the last thing that isn’t working at release. Having the distraction of switching into and out of combat in between every swing is not only distracting, it’s just plain sloppy.

  • Why?

Warhammer has been around for over 25 years and yet they have totally failed to incorporate any of the “feel” of it into the game. There is no compelling reason to play. Quest dialogs are not terribly accurate, largely unimportant and uninteresting. Honestly, taking the time to read the quest dialogs can, in many cases, lead to a quick death since practically 2 in 3 quests are long quest chains and have a nasty habit of updating while you either in combat or in a very unsafe location.

  • Overrun with Mobs

This is actually a pretty serious problem. There are just too many targets, they are all over the place and they respawn far too quickly. It is very tricky, if not impossible to out-run anything at all so this really does pose an issue. Frequently you either need to travel cross country for a task or it’s just the quickest way from point A to point B and you either have to fight a very repetitive fight every 15 seconds or have a horde of whatever beating on you for the next 5 minutes.

How not to support a product

The Samsung SCD353 miniDV Camcorder.

We bought this nifty little gadget two years ago and I was pretty happy with it until I tried taking some still shots with it.

Ultimately, it got stuck in a box and was only recently rediscovered to take some home movies of Jack. Now one of the great and wonderful selling points of this gadget is supposed to be the ability to plug it into your pc and transfer movies. Please note the supposed to be.

After 5 hours of trying to get this thing working with XP and Vista I have totally given up. There is no documentation at all on this feature, the drivers are totally inadequate and the software fails to run. A good example of the support is here. There are 2 versions of the same driver for Vista ( both of which failed to install properly ) and 2 or 3 of the same files with slightly different names for XP.

Ultimately, the most I was able to accomplish was getting both pcs to recognize the Camcorder in Memory Card mode as a drive… big deal since I have a SD memory card slot in my Vaio and Wii and could already do that. The supposed USB tape streaming mode does not work, end of story.

This would have been an ideal factoid to place in the manual.. if you want to stream a TAPE you have to use firewire.

The worst part of this is just the wasted time; convinced that this was supposed to work I wasted precious hours trying to get it running instead of 1: outputting to our DVR and making a DVD I could have easily mounted in either OS and edited or 2: hooking the thing up to the firewire port on my Vaio.

Note to Samsung, document your selling points. We don’t need 4 pages of the manual dedicated to changing the tape, what we do need is more detailed instructions on some of the more sophisticated features of your products.

New Host, New Look - Fresh Start

I did something yesterday that I’ve been wanting to do for years, and that is dumping my old web host - Addy & Associates. I’ve been hosting my domain with them for 10 years or so and after seeing the differences first hand I wish I didnt wait so long.

We’re now running from Network Solutions and the amount of ‘freebies’ and basic rate services is mind boggling.

Well, with all of that out of the way I will be getting down to business and getting many, many more things online and available.
